Eric Magassa – Heartbeat/Drumbeat

September 12 – November 15

Heartbeat/Drumbeat av Eric Magassa, 2025.

About the exhibition

In the exhibition Heartbeat/Drumbeat, Eric Magassa creates space by utilizing multiple layers of expression—image, color, sound, and movement—that intersect and converge in a spatial composition that creates a rhythmic and pulsating orchestra that gently weaves together the personal and the collective.

As his starting point Magassa works with old photo albums and archival images bearing traces of colonial history, but also personal family memories. By doing this, Magassa explores questions of identity, place, and memory—and the way that they continue to live and resonate within the body. The images form the foundation of a larger narrative: a spatial and rhythmic tapestry of voices, images, and stories.

Heartbeat/Drumbeat is an exhibition where the personal intersects with the historical, and the private converges with the public. Visitors are invited to enter a living space, rich with memories and experiences. Playfulness and severity, vulnerability and strength overlap, together creating a pulsating presence.

About the artist

Eric Magassa (b. 1972) is an artist based in Gothenburg whose work include collage, painting, photography, and video. These practices are often combined in multifaceted, large-scale installations. His distinctive, vibrant compositions revolve around decolonial narratives and explore questions of identity, place, and belonging. By employing several archives and visualize patterns in what is often overlooked, he investigates ways of seeing and thinking, that in many ways challenge the common white exhibition room and its narrow aesthetics.

Magassa studied at Central Saint Martins in London and the Art Students League of New York. He has exhibited at venues including Malmö Konsthall (2023), Tensta Konsthall (2021–22), and Moderna Museet in Stockholm (2018), and has participated in biennials such as the Gwangju Biennale (2024), Borås Art Biennial (2024), and the Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (GIBCA [2019]).
