1980, Sweden

Born in Gothenburg, Sweden 1980, the artist Oscar Furbacken makes illusory peep-hole objects, micro sculptures and photo-based projects. His immersive installations of natural sceneries often involve the use of scale and subtle lighting to raise questions on how we perceive the world around us.

By portraying overseen microcosms of street corners as grandiose sceneries the artist proposes a new perspective upon nature and urbanity. A major part of the artists production emphasizes the key role of fungi and moss in the various ecosystems of our planet. Some fungi are adapted to evolve right after forest fires and certain mycelium can invigorate toxic wastes sites, thus allowing for life and biodiversity to return after a catastrophe. By visualizing the fragility of organisms we take for granted, Furbacken’s work urges us to reflect and consider our impact on the natural world, on which we all depend.
