1964, Italy

My research is inspired by genetics to create plastic forms in a three-dimensional vision. I don't manipulate genes, but I take inspiration from their structures. My interest is turned towards the invisible. I look at the world through a giant microscope, revealing the invisible through the use of new perspectives. My genetic structures are molecular skeletons in space.

Inspired by mathematics and biology, the work of Michelangelo Penso is a part of that rewarding line of inquiry, which has led numerous artists, in their thirst for knowledge, to explore the fascinating world of science.
In this tradition the work of Penso finds its own distinguishing feature: Penso, in fact, works to extract, through scientific enquiry, new independent forms, which is to say endowed with a life of their own and made up of industrial materials giving them intrinsic character; forms, which mark out space in terms of sculptures, that are to say objects conceived in plastic terms to converse with the surrounding environment.
Rather than a style, the work of Penso reflects an attitude that defies our expectations and challenges our conception of what art can be.
