Ieva Saulīte
1984, Lettland

I am a visual artist whose practice explores the delicate intersections of collective memory, ecological consciousness and the human subconscious. Through the deconstruction of everyday and found materials, I seek to visualise the space where our awareness meets the fear of the unknown. During the creative process, domestic objects and materials lose their original function and transform into poetic abstractions and 'creature-like' beings that reflect on contemporary society's utopias and dystopias.
Recent solo exhibitions include "Dust Bunnies. Creaturesque" (2025), "Bundles of Persistent Thoughts" (2024) and "Shelter ↔ Storage" (2024). I have developed a visual language in which dust, bundles and worn items serve as metaphors for our internal physical and emotional burdens. This process serves as a 'subjective measurement', capturing the passage of time and our material heritage.
Beyond material recycling, I am particularly interested in traditional handicrafts and applied arts that are gradually disappearing and are often only practised by the older generation. In my upcoming projects, I intend to learn and exchange these skills, incorporating them into my artistic process and creating a bridge of knowledge between generations. I am interested in deconstructing these traditional techniques and exploring how they can be transformed into new contemporary art forms while preserving their conceptual value.
My methodology is rooted in 'slow art' and sustainability. In the digital age, I consciously opt for traditional, tactile practices to foster empathy and tolerance. I believe that art is a universal language which enables us to communicate and understand our connection to something greater than ourselves. My goal is to create a space for dialogue about our shared future by combining personal heritage and disappearing crafts.
