Open Call is the application form where professional artists from all over the world can apply to participate in the exhibition in 2024. It will be open until February 28th.

What is OpenArt

OpenArt is an exhibition that takes place in the city center of Örebro every second summer. Contemporary artworks are displayed outdoors and available for public interaction day and night during the exhibition period. For each edition the festival presents a large number of artists working in a wide variety of art mediums and techniques. The majority of the artworks are sculpture and installations but we welcome artists working in all disciplines, interested in the intersection between art and the public.

OpenArt is primarily an outdoor exhibition, which is promoted in this year's selection of artworks. Artists who intend to apply to OpenArt 2024 should primarily apply with artwork that can be placed outdoors. There will be an opportunity for applicants to add a portfolio with more ideas or existing artworks if indoor areas arise later in the planning.

Sustainability in mind

OpenArt is run by a small team working in a warm hearted manner, able to offer technical advise and some assistance during the production process in the workshop space at our facilities. As most of the projects exhibited at OpenArt are of temporary character we aim to use material carefully and in a sustainable and cautios way when producing.

It is important to have an overall plan of the material used before, during and after the exhibition. For example, can materials be collected for a project and then recycled after the exhibition?

The artists

We require the artist to have the knowledge to manage their chosen materials and production themselves. Each artist is expected to lead the technical work installing the art work in a secure and responsible way. This also includes staying within the agreed budget and deadlines set in consultation with the team.

The selection process

After the Open Call has closed, the applications are analyzed and discussed by an invited jury that makes recommendations. It is then up to OpenArt to initiate conversations with the artists and decide on the selection.

By 2020, OpenArt used an art jury, the people's jury and the children's jury in the selection of artworks for the 2022 exhibition.

Budget

As participating artists:

  • Artist fee of SEK 10,000.
  • When creating a new artwork, OpenArt provides production support according to an agreed production budget.
  • OpenArt books and pays for the transport of artworks to and from the exhibition.
  • OpenArt books and pays for travel and accommodation during installation.
  • OpenArt covers costs related to the installation period such as permits, cranes, wheel loaders, lifts, electricity and technical staff.

The budget for projects is limited, so it is welcome if the artist can seek external funding for production, travel, accommodation or transport.

Open Call stängde 28 februari kl. 13:00, svensk tid

OpenArt is a contemporary art biennial taking place every other summer in Örebro, Sweden where artworks displayed outdoors are available for public interaction day and night. For each edition the festival presents a large number of artists working in a wide variety of art mediums and techniques. Most of the artworks are sculptures and installations but we welcome artists working in all mediums.

Artworks can be presented on the ground, in air, on water (Svartån), around the castle, in parks, on facades and within the shopping malls or temporary indoor locations. You can see all previous artworks in our archive: Archive OpenArt - previous exhibitions 2008-2022

OpenArt is mainly an outdoor exhibition but artworks, fragile or not, can be displayed in various ways and we welcome innovative solutions on how to exhibit art in public spaces. It is good to bear in mind that artworks placed in public on ground level needs to be durable to withstand both wind, rain and curious hands. An artwork can for example be placed out of reach on a higher level but still visible for the audience. If you have an idea on how to display your artwork outdoors when the actual artwork is fragile you can still apply to OpenArt.

As all our indoor spaces are lent to us, we don’t know how many indoor spaces we might have for the exhibition (if we have any at all). Therefore, we ask everyone to apply with artwork to be placed outdoors. However, we do ask all applying artists to add a portfolio of previous works in case we see possibilities to add more artworks to the exhibition.

No.

Your application can be modified until the last day of the Open Call.

OpenArt is an exhibition that takes place in the city center and the art will be placed outdoors available for public interaction day and night during the exhibition period. We see possibilities for a wide range of art mediums and techniques but are particularly looking for artworks for the open space and in particular new ideas on what public art can be.

Something that is also good to keep in mind is that OpenArt targets an audience which isn’t usually in contact with art and therefore has another curiosity and level of respect towards it. This requires the artwork to be made of durable materials, to be able to withstand wind, rain and curious hands.

Artists can apply as solo, duo or group. Accepted groups or duos share the artist fee of 10.000 SEK.

You can submit your application in English. Due to an international staff we appreciate if also Swedish artists apply in English. But it is of course ok to apply in Swedish if that is preferred.

If you are among the selected artists, you will be contacted by the curatorial team at OpenArt, who will provide you with all the necessary information for the next step.

OpenArt will contact all applicants by e-mail sometime during late spring 2023 (approximately May). You are officially a participating artist when a contract is signed between you and OpenArt.

Confirmed artists will receive an artist fee of 10.000 SEK (a confirmed group will share 10.000 SEK).

When creating new artworks, OpenArt provides production support according to an agreed production budget. OpenArt in dialogue with the artist should find the most appropriate, time-efficient, and cost-effective solutions.

OpenArt books and pays for the transport of artworks to and from the exhibition.

OpenArt books and pays for travel and accommodation during installation.

OpenArt covers costs related to the installation period such as permits, cranes, wheel loaders, lifts, electricity, and technical staff.

The budget for projects is limited, so it is welcome if the artist can seek external funding for production, travel, accommodation, or transport as OpenArt tries to do the same.

When producing an artwork, we encourage the artist to use materials that are less permanent or may be reusable and here OpenArt can be supportive in looking for this kind of material. OpenArt has a large network of local partners to collaborate with when it comes to production efficiency such as cutting costs on materials and manufacturing. This also applies for already existing artwork that might need alteration when being placed in public space.

OpenArt can offer technical guidance, support and some assistance throughout the process. At the OpenArt office we have a wood workshop, metal workshop, printers and other facilities such as kitchen and social spaces. The OpenArt team work hard and expect the artist to work hard as well and to be a project leader of their own work with us as support. Artists are expected to participate in the installation of their own artwork and OpenArt will do a safety inspection of the artwork before opening.

It is entirely up to the artist to decide if the artwork is for sale. The purpose of the biennial is not to sell artwork and for a lot of the artworks it is not possible to sell as they are site-specific and meant to last only during the exhibition time. The normal procedure is that the artwork produced for the exhibition is demolished afterwards and the artwork lent to the exhibition is sent back to the artist. If something is sold during the exhibition OpenArts commission is 30%.

OpenArt bears the cost for the transportation of lent artwork to and from the exhibition. Artists are responsible for the packing and packing materials for their works. Taking photos of how the artwork is packed is a part of the routine. The artist is obliged to give OpenArt packing instructions when it is time to send the artwork back. The packing materials should be adapted to the method of transport. Wooden packaging is recommended as OpenArt normally doesn’t use art shippers.

Yes, the artworks are insured throughout the exhibition period and during transport to and from the exhibition.

Please send your inquiries to openart@orebro.se.

If you have lent an artwork for the exhibition, OpenArt will book and pay for transport back to where it came from.

If you have produced a temporary artwork for OpenArt they are usually demolished after exhibition and materials are recycled.

It is important to have an overall plan of the material used before, during and after the exhibition. For example, can materials be collected for a project and then recycled after the exhibition?
