In 2009, Wang Rui graduated with a master’s degree in digital media from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. In 2012, she received a master’s degree in digital multi-media from Alfred University. She currently lives and works in Beijing. In this video work, she has selected numerous public and private spaces in Beijing as the backdrops for a performance in which she blows up balloons then destroys them. The video contains vibrations from the momentary explosions, piercing sound, and different environments, all of which constitute her distorted, fragile, broken, and even destructive performance methods.
This performance is not the release or expression of her personal circumstances and emotions; instead, it is a conflicting visual transformation created by the lost fantasies and broken realities of the younger generation of Chinese. Her actions also represent the confusion and choices they must confront in life, because everything solid in China is eventually destroyed.Text: Feng Boyi
