Facing is an art project made by EriK Ravelo and Karen Oetling, using acid to create, not to destroy beauty.
Every year, hundreds of women are brutally attacked with acid substances. About one quarter of these women do not survive, while the survivors live with serious health and psychological issues.
Facing is a series of large-scale portraits, made by rusting metal leaves with acid, to reveal the inspiring faces of women. The project is also a collaboration with Pakistani activist Iram Saaed, who was attacked with acid in 1996, because she refused a marriage proposal. Iram was blinded in her right eye and has had over 25 operations so far. She now works to help victims recover and reintegrate.
